The first element needed for a web site is the
DOMAIN NAME.
Simply a company or business name for the world of the Internet, it is very important that you choose a name that reflects either your business image or it has 'marketing' appeal. Let's talk see what these names are! |
|
The Australian 'dot au' (.au) at the end of .com,.org or net shows the world that the name is a name registered with the Australian Internet agencies. Anyone from anywhere in then world can use register an Australian domain. It doesn't mean that any name using the .au after it is Australian. It just means it is registered with the Australian authorities. In Australia they are stricter than any other country in as much as you either have to have a name that is either a registered business name or a corporation name. This was implemented to try and stop many from buying names and then reselling them to businesses who needed those names. It didn't stop the trade but put a dent in it. AMERICAN DOMAIN NAMES -- . COMIn the true democratic sense anyone in America can register any name they want unless someone else has already taken it. The government have no rules on who can or cannot have what name. This if course makes it fine for the promoter who goes in an buys as many good names as he can and then later resells them for gobs of profit. For example the name 'business.com' was recently sold for US$7.5 million yet it cost $75 to register for two years!! Many companies in Australia, Russia, Holland, Germany, Ireland, Turkey or whatever country you like, are using the 'dot com' names. Most do it because they can get the name they want without any bother if it is available and because it us shorter than having an extend dot au etc. after it. There is really no advantage at this stage of the game to have a name that has your country extension behind it unless you want it . In fact maybe the reverse is true. They both cost about the same so it's up to you. It is advised that if the name is available in both domains then get it in both. It will stop someone getting your name in the other domain. |
NOW CHECK YOUR NAME
|
Once you decide which name you want to use and what domain you want to register in, the next step is to check to see if the name is still available. Remember you are wanting to register a name that no one else in the WORLD has got and that is a pretty tall order. Use the search facilities at the top of the page to do this. If the name you chose has gone, try a few others until you get one. Only choose in the .com or .com.au domains don't go near the .org or .net domains unless you are that type of business. Australian Domains Even if your name shows as available in the Australian .com domain, you will need the following criteria to be able to register it yourself. Your business registration number or corporate ACN number of the name that is either EXACTLY as you want to register it, or the the words run in the same order as your business or ACN names. For example if you want to register bongo.com.au your business or ACN name must be the bongo or it could be bongo drums or drongo bongo etc. This is still not a guarantee they will register it. They may suggest you register drongo bong. If you really want the name you have chosen, register a business name such as bongo.com or just bonbg and then try the domain search again. This usually does it. American Domains In true democracy the American domains are open to anyone who want them. It is on a first in, first served basis. You do not need to have any name pre registered nor be an American or anything at all. If you like the name and it is available, pay the money and it is yours! NOW YOU NEED..... Once you have your name you now need two things.... WEB PAGES - These need to be created in the accepted fashion either by yourself or a professional. If you want a pro job done, then go to a professional. There are very few sites done by amatuers that do a professional job. They may look good but cosmetics are just one element of a sight. A HOST - You now need a computer SERVER where your pages are kept and where the world can access them easily 24 hours a day. We are a dedicated web creation and hosting company so we can easily give you a quotation on these costs. NOW PROMOTE YOUR SITE ! The last step now is really the first step! There are many way to do this and you should consult professionals just as you would consult advertising agencies, magazines, radio, TV etc. in the real world when promoting something! SEARCH ENGINES The very first step is to try and list your address with the search engines. This is NOT big time promotion although it may help some to find your site. Search engines are like the phone directories. You can search for any word or words and it will show you what web pages it has stored that have this word in them somewhere. There is no guarantee that the engines will list your page and the most important engines do not accept payment to get high on the list. Except for Yahoo, all listings are done automatically by 'robot' programs who look at your pages then determine if they should be on their list and if so, where on the list. It could take up to 3 months or more to get on these lists as so many new pages are being submitted to the search engines each day from all over the world. You can keep submitting from our Search engine pages every week or so if you want to and maybe you might eventually get accepted. Try here now... |
Well that's the first part of the story.....
